The Differences Between the Book and the Mini-Series

  • Elena isn't the one who tells Pearl about her father. As previously stated, the characters are less likable in the show. Of course, they have to dramatize the story but some of the events do not actually occur in the book.
  • Lexie stealing Pearl's essay never happened. Pearl offered to help Lexie. The essay stealing wasn't a thing, Lexie is a much more likable character in the book. She is just entitled and ignorant, but she definitely grows throughout the book.
  • Mia is nicer to Lexie after the abortion. She actually starts to hang out at the apartment more. When her boyfriend breaks up with her, she actually goes to Mia for comfort.
  • Trip never abandons Pearl after they have sex. He's pretty consistent and supportive in their relationship. The book allows us to get more into Trip's head because of the narration. The television show, however, puts Trip on the back-burner.
  • Pearl sincerely loves and respects her mother even through the lies. She sometimes gets an attitude, but the television show puts a larger strain on their relationship. In the book, Pearl is the one that brings up the famous picture of Mia and immediately regrets it. She never wants to put her mom in a bad situation.
  • Izzy doesn't do the babydoll sale at school. The book actually shows a lot less of Izzy than the television show. She seems like way more of an afterthought until the very end.
  • Mia and Izzy are not explicitly queer. Mia's relationship with her professor is questionable and slightly inappropriate. But the television show takes it to a whole different level when they start dating. Of course, they could, but we're never told that how we are in the show.
  • Elena's College Boyfriend doesn't exist. Once again, they needed to spice up the story a bit. This whole story line just didn't happen.
  • Trip and Moody don't actually fight. Moody's temper tantrum at the end, is just an argument with Pearl. Trip isn't there for the majority of it.
  • Izzy never gets caught setting (or trying to set) the fire in the house. That whole scene in the show was super dramatic and heart-wrenching, but it doesn't happen in the book. It was a nice addition. Especially, the conversation with Lexie and Elena.
  • The Richardson kids set never set the fire! I wondered why the television show didn't open how the book did - with the kids talking about who set the fire. It wouldn't make sense in the television show because the kids set the fire!
